Many families will schedule an annual summer trip when the children are out of school. Summer trips can be to amusement parks or simply camping for a weekend. Taking annual vacations is a good way to get away from the stressors of everyday life and to spend time and bond as a family.

Most households have two working parents and children who are involved in activities, which allows for very little family time. Getting away on vacation together is a good way to reinforce the family bond and values.

Christmas and other holiday traditions are fairly common amongst families. Many of these traditions are valued so much that they are carried down through the generations. Sometimes it may be impossible to observe a tradition, for example in the case of an emergency. However, try to make plans to observe the tradition as soon as possible. Most people will not care if the tradition is observed later, as long as an attempt is made.

Allow modifications of a current tradition as the need arises. For example, if you usually have Thanksgiving dinner at your house, but this year someone has had a baby and really doesn’t want to or cannot leave the house, offer to hold the dinner at their house. Traditions such as Thanksgiving dinner are typically more about being with the family than always gathering in the same place.

Allowing flexibility with your traditions ensures that you will be able to conform to any changes that arise year after year.

Welcome these variations on your family traditions and you will ensure that they last for many more generations.

Research has proven overwhelmingly that children who have meals with their family at least twice a week are less likely to try drugs or alcohol, less likely to become depressed, and more likely to make good grades. Who knew eating with your family around the dinner table could be so good for children and teens?

Another benefit of having a family dinner is helping your family develop good eating habits. When you’re eating at home, you’re less likely to be eating as much junk food. If you’re running from place to place, you’ll likely pick up fast food in between activities. That’s no way to eat on regular basis. Eating at home allows you to provide fruits and vegetables, control sweets, and control the fats your family eats.

Eating at home is also considerably cheaper than eating out. You have control over how much you spend, the serving sizes your family eats and the types of foods you buy. Since you’re at home, why not teach the children and teens in your family how to cook so they’ll have that skill when they move out?

It is possible someone in the family will have an activity or appointment that can’t be broken, and that’s okay. Having an occasional meal where the whole family can’t be present isn’t a problem. When you’re trying to create a nurturing tradition such as family dinner, it’s important to be flexible but not allow the interruptions to your family dinners become the norm.

Try these nine family activities for an exciting end to your summer:

1. Make a memory book. Have everyone in the family get together and make a memory book or scrapbook. Collect photos from your summer or other scraps and artwork that would fit into a book of memories. This will give you a lasting memento of the good times you had over the summer.

2. Have a splashing good time. The summer usually means a good time around water. Throw a pool party or play around in the sprinklers. Have a water balloon fight with your family. Involve water while you still can, before the cold days of winter arrive.

3. Make summertime recipes. Pick out your favorite summertime recipes and make food and drinks with your family. Start with drinks like iced tea and lemonade, or pick another family favorite that you associate with summer. Then, make summer treats or throw a barbeque.

4. Throw a summer party. Get together with your family and throw an end of the summer bash for all of your friends. Your family can plan the party together, cook the food and make decorations. Take lots of photos of your party so you can remember the good time you had.

5. Go to the zoo. Summer is a great time to enjoy the zoo during your free time. Go to the zoo with your family one last time before school takes away much of that free time. It’s also a great way to learn about many different kinds of animals.

6. Play video games. Video games can be fun for the whole family. Some game consoles even have games that’ll get the whole family active. Choose a sports game, a family board game or a racing game and compete against your family for an exciting time together.

7. Go to the beach. The end of the summer might be one of your last opportunities to hit the beach this year. Wear sunscreen to protect your skin. Bring plenty of towels and beach toys. Build a sand castle with your kids. Bury one of your family members in the sand.

8. Get ready for school. Enjoy getting ready for the school year with your family. Find the fun in shopping for clothing and school supplies. Get the whole family involved. Allow your kids to make some of the clothing decisions and to pick out some of their favorite school supplies.

9. Relax at home. Enjoy some quiet time at home before the craziness of the school year starts. Order takeout and talk around the dinner table. Rent some family friendly movies to enjoy while you beat the heat together.

Pick one of these, or come up with your own end of summer activity ideas. The most important thing is that you take the time to enjoy your family. The end of summer can be an exciting time for your family to bond and experience priceless memories.

Start by finding out activities that everyone in your family is willing to participate in. This could be bowling, bicycling, hiking, running, or simply walking. Any activity you can decide upon that everyone will do is a good choice.

Once you’ve chosen the family fitness activity, you’ll want to make a fitness plan with the whole family. Look at everyone’s schedules and see what obligations the family has. Mark all of these activities on a calendar so you can see when everyone is available.

While it would be best if the entire family could do something together, that simply may not be possible. Perhaps one of the older children works after school. Another may play in the school band which requires them to practice every night. Mom or Dad may also have business obligations which keep them away from home more nights than not.

If everyone can’t do the same activity at the same time, you can have a competition of sorts among the family members. Consider measuring and weighing everyone to find out what their starting statistics are for the fitness challenge. This will be the baseline information to determine how everyone is doing.

Create a fitness journal for each person. You can find premade fitness journals online if you have the time to look for them or you can create one which meets your family’s needs. They don’t have to be complicated. The journal only needs a place for the date, a place to specify what activity was done, and several squares to mark off each 20 minutes of physical activity they did.

Set realistic fitness goals for each person based on their current age, health, and abilities. For instance, if one person in your family is very young, they’re obviously not going to be able to lift fifty pounds. Likewise, someone with health concerns isn’t going to be able run the same distance as someone who’s healthy. They may, however, be able to walk the same distance or at least work up to reaching that distance.

The American Heart Association (AHA) has indicated that people from 18-65 should participate in moderately-intense physical activity at least 30 minutes for five days a week. Or they can do vigorous-intensity aerobic activity for 20 minutes a day for three days each week. If the people in your family have been sedentary for a long time, you’ll want to work up to the guidelines from the AHA. It is also a good idea to check with your family doctor to ensure each person is able to become more physically active.

Once you have your family fitness challenge goals established, you’ll also want to determine some rewards for meeting those goals. Rather than giving food rewards, choose something everyone can enjoy that doesn’t relate to food. Perhaps you can plan a trip to the beach or the movies.

Remember the ultimate goal when trying to determine how to get your entire family fit. You want everyone to be healthy and happy. Create a fitness challenge everyone can participate in, set reasonable goals, and then celebrate each member’s successes with a family reward.

Consider how many of your teen’s friends you’ll allow them to invite over. If the party is too large, your teen won’t be able to spend quality time with each guest. However, you don’t want them to feel like they’re leaving anyone out. Five or six friends are a good number to shoot for, depending upon the size of your house.

Choose a theme. This will help you decide what foods to serve and what types of activities to enjoy. Is there a movie everyone would like see? Movie night themes are great. You can prepare popcorn or other snacks you’d get at a movie theater. Sports themes are good ideas for both male and female slumber parties, particularly if your teen plays that particular sport. There are many theme ideas you can come up with. If your teen enjoys it with their friends, that theme will likely be a hit with them.

Establish some rules. Make sure you and your teen discuss non-negotiable rules such as no members of the opposite sex, no drinking, and no pranks. Discuss the rules with the guests after they all arrive and your teen can enjoy themselves and you’ll have less to worry about.

Plan a menu. Once you have chosen a theme, you’ll have a better idea of what type of food to prepare. Of course, no matter what theme is chosen, it’s a good possibility the teens will want pizza. Rather than order pizza for delivery, why not purchase the ingredients and allow the teens to make their own pizzas? Don’t forget about breakfast. Even if they stay up all night long, most teens will appreciate having something more than cereal and milk planned.

Play a game or two. Some teens love to play board games. It that describes your teen, ensure you have several games to choose from. Here are some more suggestions for games:

- If they prefer to be more active, plan a game of charades using popular music, actors, movies, or something similar as the basis for the game.

- Write down the names of famous people on sticky notes and place one on the back of each teen. They have to figure out who they are by asking their friends questions. The first person who guesses correctly wins.

- Rent a karaoke machine and let the teens sing their hearts out. If you have a videotape recorder, you can allow your teen to tape the party so they’ll have something to remember the evening, and possibly the bad singing, by.

1. You’ve taken ample time to grieve the loss of your past relationship. This means you’ve worked through the emotional aspects of the loss as well as understanding that putting yourself into circulation is opening yourself up to be hurt again.

2. You’re no longer in contact with your ex unless you share children. There’s no wishful thinking that the relationship can still work, and you’re ready to move on.

3. You’ve looked at the circumstances of your break-up, realize you both made mistakes, and own responsibility for yours. Since you know what you did wrong, you’re able to avoid those mistakes in any future relationships.

4. You’re not looking for a rebound relationship or someone to replace your old partner. You’ve given being on your own some serious thought but aren’t ready to get tied down to one person again very soon.

5. Even though you’re lonely without a partner, you’re comfortable being on your own again. You’ve learned about new strengths, developed new habits, and are growing as a person. You like who you’ve become and don’t “need” a relationship to make you whole.

6. If you haven’t dated in quite a while, you’ve learned about what’s now considered appropriate or not. You’ve heard about speed dating, online dating, and other forms enough to know what to expect. You also remember what old-fashioned dating was like and think you can go through with it.

7. You have a support group whom you can call on to go out on a group date to meet new people rather than jumping right into the one-on-one dating scene again with both feet and eyes closed. Having people you trust around you when you first start dating again can be a great comfort and a way to avoid bad situations.

8. You’re comfortable with getting to know several people at a time instead of going right for the “relationship” again. It’s alright to play the field for a while when you first start dating again. There’s no hurry to rush into another long-term relationship.

Going through a break-up isn’t fun for anyone but it does happen, unfortunately. Knowing if you are ready to start dating again isn’t always an easy thing to determine. You can use some of the ideas above; ultimately you’ll know deep in your heart that you’ve moved on and are willing to take another chance. Sure, you may be hurt again, but in the game of love, that’s one of the chances you take.

Start with the guest list. Ask your child who they’d like to attend. Some party experts recommend one guest for each year of your child’s life. If your child is very young, this is probably a good rule of thumb.

Set the stage by decorating with bright, cheerful colors. If you have a disco ball and flashing lights, dig them out to lend credence to the atmosphere you’re trying to create. Go through your child’s favorite music or purchase something new which the children are familiar with and are apt to move to.

Prepare foods you know your child and their friends will eat. Pizza bagels are a great option so each child can have their own personal pizza. You may also want to provide baby carrots and fruit such as grapes or apple slices. Don’t forget the birthday cake or cupcakes decorated with musical notes to keep with the theme of the party. Provide milk or juice boxes for the children when they get thirsty.

Play fun musical games to get the children moving. Limbo under a stick or freeze dance. What? You’ve never heard of freeze dance? Play music and let the children dance to their heart’s content. Instead of just freezing when the music stops, have them freeze into a shape associated with birthday parties such as a candle, party hat, or balloon.

You can still host a fun dance party even if your children are older, but you may want to choose different music. Parents may or may not be shocked about the type of dancing done these days. Some seems downright vulgar so you may want to ask your teen to have a decade-themed party.

Ask your teen to look through old records, cassette or 8-track tapes you still have to get an idea of what music they may want to play during their party. Of course, unless you still have the equipment to play them on, you may have to buy copies of the same songs on a newer format.

Suggest the teens dress up accordingly to add to the fun of the party. Give a prize to the teen that comes in the most accurate costume. However, instead of giving them a prize associated with the theme, give them something they’ll enjoy like a coupon for a CD of their choice.

Prepare plenty of food since teens can be big eaters. If you can think of popular foods of that time period, it will work well with the party theme. Try to find decorations to match the decade theme, as well.

For a teen party, you’ll want to have rules set such as no drugs, no alcohol, and no couples pairing off and disappearing. To help your teen feel like a grown-up, stay out of their way as much as you can but let your teen know you’re close by if you’re needed.

Follow these tips on how to host a fun dance party for children of all ages. Using the same basic ideas, you can have a party your child will enjoy no matter what age they are. And since you know children love to move, you’ll provide them with a great party.

Think back to when you were a child. Most likely you spent a good part of your summer playing outside with your siblings. Or you played with neighborhood children who were also out of school. What games did you play? Chances are your children will like them, too.

Summer temperatures are normally hot, so your children will want to cool off. Rather than letting them sit inside in the air conditioning, tell them about backyard water games you played as a child. Fill some water balloons and plan to have a good, old-fashioned water balloon fight! Make sure your children know not to throw the balloons at the head or face since injuries can occur. They’ll also want to pick up the pieces of the balloons after the balloon fight is over.

Ask some friends or neighbors over and have races using a filled water balloon. There are a number of ways to have a relay race. You can have two players on each team place a filled balloon in between their heads and have them try to reach the other side of a field. You can also have everyone put a water balloon between their knees and try to get to the finish line without busting their balloon.

Teach the children to play hopscotch. If you can’t remember the rules, they can be found online on a number of websites. Use chalk to create a hopscotch board on the sidewalk or driveway of your home. Give a stone to each child and tell them to get hopping.

Play Capture the Flag. Separate the children into two teams. Give each team a different-colored bandana which is hung at their “home base,” which is at two different ends of a field or yard. You’ll also want to have two areas set aside for “jails” – one for each team. While the teams are trying to capture the flag and members are tagged, they’ll be placed in the jail. Any member who can reach the jail without being tagged will be able to free their team members. The team who captures the others’ flag first wins.

You may want to teach your children to have an egg and spoon race. Give each child a raw egg and a spoon. Create a race course and tell them they’ll have to go from where they start around a particular landmark, and then return to their starting place. Put the egg in the spoon and send them off.

If they drop their egg and it doesn’t break, they can pick it up and keep going. However, if the egg breaks they’re out of the race. Be sure to remind the children they can’t use their free hand to hold the egg on the spoon. Whoever goes through the race from point A to point B and back to point A without breaking their egg is the winner.

You know it’s possible for your children to have fun without electronics – you did it. Use some of these fun summer outdoor games for children to get them outside and in the fresh air. They’re sure to have fun if they give the games a try.

Start out by determining how much money you want to spend for the party. Remember, once you choose a theme you’ll want to have decorations, tableware (plates, napkins, cups, and tablecloth), food, beverages, birthday cake, invitations, and games. Decide how much you can spend for each item and don’t go over it. There are plenty of ways to have a great party without breaking the bank.

Next sit down with the birthday child and ask them what they would like for a theme. They may want to have a character party with their favorite cartoon character, movie, or something along those lines. If that’s the case, it’s possible there may already be decorations and tableware available. Try to find matching invitations, plates and cups with that theme. The other items for the table can be co-ordinating colors if you need to save money.

Typical themed parties for girls would be princesses or other Disney characters. Boys may enjoy having a super hero or pirate theme. Instead of going overboard with store-bought decorations, try to think of ways you can decorate with items you have at home or can print off the internet.

Buy or make the invitations in plenty of time to get them addressed and sent out. Two weeks is generally a good amount of time. This will also leave time for the parents to call and let you know if their child will attend.

Plan a few games or a craft which is in keeping with the party theme. Don’t feel pressured to provide goodie bags for the guests. While they are a nice thought, if you talk to most parents they’d rather spend the money on something else for the party. They also don’t like stepping on the small toys once the children lose them.

Food is always a necessity at birthday parties. Not only will you want to have a great birthday cake, you’ll probably also want other snacks. Since the children will be having sweets in the cake, try to serve other healthy snacks like vegetable sticks or fruit. If possible, stay away from chips and dips. Serve only 100% juice for beverages.

Themed birthday parties can be a lot of fun but they can also be a lot of work for the adults. Don’t feel like you have to purchase a party kit or have everything related to the theme if money is a concern. Your child is most interested in having their friends over, being the center of attention, and enjoying themselves.

Perhaps you never went to camp when you were a child so you don’t have a frame of reference. You may not know how to determine your child’s readiness. Here are some ideas to help you make that decision.

Take your cue from your children. In many cases they’re able to determine their readiness before a parent does. If they’re interested, it’s a good chance they’re ready.

Has your child spent the night with a friend or relative before? Children who are able to be away from parents before are more likely to be good candidates for an overnight camp experience. However, if this is your child’s first experience with overnight camp, see if any of their friends are also attending so they’ll be less likely to experience problems.

Consider sending your child for a shorter session for their first time at overnight camp. By having only one or two weeks away, instead of the 4-8 week sessions which were common in the past, your child will be more likely to stick out the entire session.

How responsible is your child? Can they keep track of their own things and wash their clothes if they’re going to be gone for several weeks? Are they responsible enough to use camp money to purchase things they need rather than candy or other junk food?

Each child is an individual. Even if you were eager to go to overnight camp at the age of nine, that doesn’t necessarily mean your child will when they turn the same age. If they are uncomfortable spending one night at a friend’s without calling you, they are not ready for overnight camp.

Is your child comfortable seeking help from other adults or authority figures if you’re not around? Children who are still attached to their parents often want help only from those they are comfortable with. A child with this tendency may need more time before going to overnight camp.

Picky eaters may also have difficulty at overnight summer camps. The staff may prepare special meals for a child with allergies or religious beliefs which limits what they can eat. However, they’re not going to be willing to prepare a special meal for a child simply because they don’t like what’s being served.

If you ask other parents how they could tell if their child was ready for overnight camp, you’ll likely get a number of answers. When it comes to staying at an overnight camp, you’re the best person to determine if your child is prepared. Look through these tips to help, but then ultimately trust your child to know if they’re ready or not.
