Academic success is important in a child’s life as it can help to shape the future. There are many things you can do to help your child or children succeed and they all start at home. Keep track of your child’s school activities, set up a consistent routine and ensuring that they have enough rest are simple tips that will help them to excel in school. In addition, parents who are involved in their children’s education help to foster the learning experience.

* Start a homework routine. Set a certain schedule for your child to do homework every day. If there is no homework assigned for the day, encourage your child to study and review the week’s assignments. Constantly reviewing information helps to instill the knowledge in your child’s brain, thereby helping them to gain better insight into the lessons.

* Sleep is important because it allows your brain to recharge itself. If your child does not get enough sleep, it will affect their performance in school and out of school. Sleep is necessary for the body to function properly so make sure your child gets at least eight hours of sleep each night.

* Take an interest in your child’s academics. It may have been a long time since you were in school, but you should still be able to check your child’s homework and assist them when necessary. Reading with children is a good way to spark interest in learning; it is also a good way to spend quality time with your child in a low-key manner.

* Keep your child organized when it comes to school activities. Have your child carry a planner for teachers to record assignments in. Also, keep a wall calendar in your house with your child’s schedule and assignments. This will help to avoid any missing assignments and will also let you know how frequently your child studies.

Helping your child to succeed in school is one of your biggest jobs as a parent. Without establishing a routine in the household for both homework and bedtime, it can be very easy for a child to lose interest in school work. Not getting enough sleep and not being organized can affect your child’s function in school as well. By utilizing the top tips you are helping to establish your child’s academic success.

Your child’s first day at school can be a nerve-racking experience for both parents and children. In order to keep your child organized and make the experience a little less unnerving, it is a good idea to prepare your child with a first day of school checklist. This checklist covers the basic information as well as instructions if your child should get lost.

* Make sure your child knows his or her teacher’s name. This will help ease the fears of not knowing where to go. If your child gets lost, another teacher can easily guide your child to the right place. If your child happens to forget their teacher’s name, they can still get help from another teacher who will likely guide them to the main office.

* Most schools send home a checklist of items that children will need to bring on their first day of school. Review the checklist and pack your child’s backpack a few days before school begins. You can double-check the backpack the night before to ensure your child has not removed any of the items.

* Sit down with your child and explain in simple terms what the first day of school is going to be like. While you may not be able to remember as far back as your first day of kindergarten, as a parent your child relies on you to ease any fears they may have. Allow your children to ask questions about their first day at school and answer them as best as you can.

* If possible, take your child to school on that first day of kindergarten. Your child may feel more at ease if he or she has you to direct them to the proper location. Be aware that your child may panic when you have to leave and the experience may be hard on you as well.

* Make sure your child has an emergency contact card to present to the teachers. This card is important because it will have all of the necessary information for your child’s school to contact you should they need to. Also ensure that your child knows or has your home phone number written down. This way they can contact you if the need arises.

It is very easy to get caught up in your child’s first day of school which can be a nerve-racking experience for both parents and children. You can help to ensure your child gets off to a great start by making sure they are prepared. If you cannot take your child to school on that first day, make sure they know their teacher’s name and where they will be going.

Fill out all emergency contact information and make sure the information reaches your child’s teacher. Also be sure that your children know their home phone number so they can contact you if the need arises. Be sure to congratulate your child on a job well done after they arrive home.

Shopping for school clothes can get expensive quickly; that is, unless you know where to shop for bargains. Children, especially teens, are into brand-name clothing that can be quite pricey.

Shopping at outlet stores can ease up on your budget without sacrificing your teen’s wants. There is also the opportunity to make your children’s clothing if you are handy with a sewing machine. Use these bargain tips to give your children a cool back to school wardrobe without breaking the bank.

Shopping at outlet stores such as TJ Maxx or Marshalls can help cut back the cost of buying designer clothes. Closeout stores such as these purchase the leftover products from designers at a lower price so they are able to pass the savings on to you, the consumer. In addition to designer clothes, backpacks can be found at decent prices at these outlet stores as well.

If you are handy with a sewing machine, it is possible to make your children’s clothes yourself. To make it a family activity, involve your children in picking out fabrics and designing them with rhinestones and such after they have been completed. Involving your children in the process will help them to be proud and enthusiastic about wearing their clothing. In addition, you can be sure your children’s clothes will be unique and not carbon copies of other children’s clothing.

Second-hand shops usually carry a good variety of clothing. Before shopping in outlet stores, check out any local second-hand shops in your area. Since most of the proceeds go to charity, you will be helping out local organizations and saving money at the same time. You cannot go wrong there.

You can also accept hand-me-downs from other family members who have children your age or older. Many times clothes are only worn a few times before children grow out of them and family members are happy to share them instead of throwing the clothing out. If you have nieces or nephews that have outgrown clothing, consider asking their parents if you could have the clothing instead of letting it go to waste.

One last option is to budget for school clothes; buy a little at a time instead of all at once. It is perfectly fine to start your child off with just a few outfits and then build up the wardrobe over the course of the school year. Save up money over the summer while your child is out of school and you will be prepared when the time to do school shopping approaches.

Shopping for cool school clothes does not have to be a wallet cruncher. There are many places you can shop around and find bargains on designer clothes. If you cannot afford to buy designer clothes, even at a discount, you can involve your children and make their clothes for them if you are savvy with a sewing machine. If you budget properly over the summer and build up your child’s wardrobe little by little, you will not break the bank in one shopping trip.

Parents often have busy lives which require them to juggle more than one task at a time. This is no different for homeschooling parents. If you’re thinking about homeschooling your children, you may wonder how to balance your daily life as a homeschool mom. It is possible and these tips can help you.

Some families handle day-to-day life by creating detailed charts or schedules for each family member. They know what time breakfast is, how long to plan for each homeschool subject, what time they’ll eat lunch every day, how much free time they have, and when they’ll eat dinner. However, there’s no reason to believe this type of scheduling is necessary in order to balance your daily life as a homeschooling family.

Other families are opposite of the ones described above. They live life by the seat of their pants. They don’t plan elaborate schedules but prefer to take life as it comes. They may keep a calendar so they know about important appointments or events, but that’s as close as they get to a schedule. For them, living life one day at a time is about experiencing life as it happens rather than depending upon a piece of paper to dictate when they do things.

Does this mean that one method of balancing daily life is better than the other? Of course not! Part of the benefit of homeschooling is learning what works best for your own family. This may take time and some trial and error, but you will soon find yourself falling into a routine of sorts that is best for you.

Create an area in your home where you have access to good books and music. Having good resources around gives your child someplace to turn when they want to learn something. And the benefit is if they are interested on their own, they’re learning without realizing it. This method is often referred to as delight-driven or “unschooling.” It enables children to learn what interests them and allows Mom to be able to concentrate on taking care of the home rather than sitting with the child while they learn. Of course, even homeschooling moms know it’s important to be available when their child needs help, but they don’t feel obligated to remain right there with them.

Use real life events to help your child learn. If you’re cooking dinner, have your homeschooled child help you determine how much milk is needed if the recipe calls for one-third cup of something but you’re tripling the recipe. When you plan a trip to the grocery store, have your child write out the list of items needed. Then, while you’re walking through the store, have them help you determine which box potatoes is cheaper based on the cost and number of ounces are in the box. Both of these activities teach your child how math is important for daily life.

Get your children to help you with household duties. They can learn how to cook, sort clothing, do laundry, and stack dishes in a dishwasher. Not only will they be learning skills which will be helpful for their future, it will also make your job easier; you can also count the time they’re learning those skills as home economics – whether they’re boys or girls.

There are many things to can do to balance your daily life as a homeschool mom. Don’t feel like you have to do everything yourself. Let your partner work with your children on some of the subjects you feel uncomfortable teaching. Have your children help you with household duties. After some time you will be able to find what works best for your family so your life is more or less balanced.

More and more parents are seeking tutors for their children in order to achieve academic success in today’s rigorous educational climate. Once you’ve decided that tutoring is right for your child, preparation for that all important first tutoring session begins.

Here are a few essential guidelines for tutoring success:

1.	Set up a meeting with the tutor. Your child will have the best possible first tutoring session if he has previously had a positive experience with the tutor. Arrange for the tutor to come to your home for an informal chat or, if you’re going to a tutoring center, drop by when the teachers are free to meet and greet their newest student.

2.	Explain the reasons for tutoring to your child. Children perceive the world differently than adults. Your goal is to make the tutoring process go as smoothly as possible in order for your child to receive the maximum benefit.

•	There are many reasons you may seek academic help for your child. Your child may be below grade level. Or you may want your child to advance beyond his current grade level. Whatever the reason for searching for a tutor, your child needs to understand the benefits that tutoring will provide.

3.	Encourage your child to share feelings. Many children, especially those who may be facing difficulty in school, may be reluctant to share their feelings about the tutor or the tutoring process.

•	Spend time to discuss with your child his specific hopes and fears about the area of study or school in general. The more you know about your child’s feelings, the better the whole process will unfold.

4.	Buy new notebooks and supplies. Never underestimate how much children love to use new notebooks, pens, and pencils! Find school supplies that have your child’s favorite movie or sports star printed on it. Just having these visual reminders of beloved people or events eases a child’s anxieties and increases receptiveness to learning.

5.	Praise your child’s accomplishments in the classroom. Every child loves praise and has achieved some things in the classroom that are worthy of compliments. Tell your child how proud you are of his accomplishments. Explain to your child that tutoring will only increase success.

6.	Assure your child of your help. Your child may fear that tutoring will be an unbearable burden. Assure him that you or another knowledgeable adult will always be there to assist him with any problems that may arise.

•	Tell your child that, even if you’re unsure of the concept being taught, you’ll help seek out resources to solve the problem together. In this way, your child will be reassured that you’re both in this together!

7.	Provide incentives. Teachers use incentives to increase effort and interest in the classroom. This strategy works because the kids love receiving prizes and they get the children to do their best. Think about ways your child is motivated to work toward particular goals.

•	Something as simple as a trip to favorite restaurant or an afternoon at the park can provide that extra spark your child needs to succeed at a task. Your child will look forward to each tutoring session with the knowledge that he’s one step closer to that desirable incentive.

By following these easy guidelines, you can enable your child to be fully prepared and ready for tutoring and academic success!

Math is a subject that many kids find difficult. It seems for a lot of children you either have a natural knack for math or you don’t. However, even a child that is struggling in this area can make very good progress with the right strategies in place. For some children it’s not a matter of “being bad at math” but simply more of needing a flexible teaching approach to the subject.

Here are a few tips to help your child develop their math skills:

#1 – Don’t push too hard. It’s worth keeping in mind that some children can create an inner mental block when it comes to math. If they believe they just “don’t get it” it will be difficult to help them learn and understand the basic concepts.

Help your child relax by offering a lot of praise and letting them know that they will eventually understand the subject; it’s just a matter of practicing and applying. Try to avoid negative language such as “you won’t get into college unless you pass your math exam.” While this may be true, it can be a very daunting and frightening thought for children.

Instead concentrate on positive approaches such as explaining to your child that there’s a set formula to understanding math and that it’s not really a mystery – simply a matter of getting the formula right. Then let them know you’ll help them until they “crack the code.” By giving your child the confidence to believe that they will eventually understand the topic, you take a lot of pressure off them. In turn they may just surprise you with their progress.

#2 – Little and often. With math, as with may other subjects, an approach of little and often works best. For many children the thought of sitting down for even 30 minutes to work on math is daunting. A better option may be to practice their skills in five or ten minute bursts. Studies have shown that the ideal retention time for any new or difficult subject is eight minutes.

By practicing little and often your child may be able to develop their skills better. Another good “trick” is to write basic formulas or times tables on flash cards and let your child practice them several times throughout the days. It may only take three or four minutes but doing this regularly can really make a difference to their skills.

#3 – Use “real life” concepts. One of the best ways to develop math skills early on is to simply get a basic “real life” concept of numbers. You can easily do this by letting your child count coins or money from a young age. Did you know that because much of our money is electronic nowadays, children often can’t even recognize coins or actual money? Help your child get to grips with money by exposing them to counting and handling money early on.

Another fun and fantastic option for developing number skills is by playing games. Games like bingo, monopoly and even puzzles really develop critical skills that help with number skills. It’s a great opportunity for families to spend time together and learn. The children will simply think they’re having fun (and they will be) but they will also be learning valuable number concepts.

Helping your child with math can seem like a daunting prospect, but with these simple but effective tips you can make a big difference to your child’s skills.

Parents know how important it is for children to do well in school. In fact, you may want to know how to help your child to better grades. Read the following to give you ideas you can use to help your child’s grades improve.

* Ensure your child has a good breakfast each day before school starts. Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day for a child. Offer them something hot and nutritious to get their brain in gear before they have to start using it.

* Encourage your child to write down every assignment they’re given. Write down what the assignment is, which class it is for, and when the assignment is due back to the teacher. By having this information written down, you will be aware of their assignments and can assist them in getting them all done on time.

* Teach your child how to take notes. Writing down information your child is given in their own words may help your child remember what they’re being taught. Some children can easily remember things, but others find it more difficult. If your child has problems taking notes, purchase a small tape recorder they can take with them and use for class.

* At the end of the day, try to go through your child’s backpack with them. Read any papers which come home with your child. Discuss any upcoming assignments or tests they need to study for.

* Take time to be available for your child while they’re doing homework. This doesn’t mean you necessarily have to be sitting with them, but be in the same room so they don’t have to go searching for you. Let them know that you’re not too busy to help them if they need it.

* Praise your child for the effort they put forth when doing their schoolwork. Not all students will achieve high scores, so it’s important to let your child know you appreciate their effort and not merely the high grades they get.

* Create more “study” time for your children while they’re at home. If they are easily distracted by what’s going on in the home, turn off everything that may distract them including the television or radio. Having the house quiet may be enough to help your child get their schoolwork done.

* Offer to help your child study before a test or quiz. Get your child’s textbook or notes and ask them questions pertaining to what they’ve recently been studying. Remember to be patient with your child if they don’t immediately answer correctly.

* Sometimes children don’t learn well in a school setting because they may have a different learning style such as being a hands-on learner or being a visual learner. Schools generally appeal to auditory learners. Finding ways to reinforce what they’re hearing at school in their own learning style can do wonders in the grades your child receives.

* Try to make learning fun. Let’s face it, some subjects simply aren’t interesting to children. However, no matter what the subject is, there is a way to make learning it more fun. Finding out how to do that can greatly improve your child’s ability to retain the information.

When your child isn’t doing well in school, you want to know how to help your child to better grades. By using the above tips you may be further along in your goal to help your child’s grades improve. Best of luck in that endeavor!

There are days when some homeschool parents may even wonder what on earth they’re doing. It’s on days like that many homeschooling parents wonder again about the pros and cons of home education.

The Pros of Home Education

Your child can work at their speed. Some children may be math whizzes who easily do algebra at home but are required to remain “at level” with the students in school classes. With home education, you can allow your child to excel in the areas they enjoy. There’s also nothing wrong with your child working on many different levels if that’s where their abilities are.

You can work with your child’s bent. Not all children learn in the same way. Some children are auditory learners, some hands-on learners, and some visual learners. Instead of providing the same type of teaching for every child in your home, you can determine how your child learns best and find a curriculum which will work with your child’s bent. You may find your child will enjoy learning more if they are being taught using their learning style.

You can watch your child relate to everyone around them. In public schools, children are separated by age; the only person older than them is their teachers. As they learn to deal with the world around them, they may have problems relating to people older or younger. Home educated children, on the other hand, normally can carry on a conversation and relate to people of all ages because they’re not segregated into age groups.

You have more control over what your child learns. Some people homeschool because of religious convictions. Others do so because they don’t want their children to be exposed to certain subjects in the way public schools generally handle them. As a parent who homeschools, you have more control over what your child learns, how they learn it, and when they learn it.

The Cons of Home Education

You’re together all the time. Let’s face it; too much of a good thing isn’t always good. When you’re together all the time, everyone can become overwhelmed and stressed by all the togetherness. Find activities your children can do away from you and this problem can be handled.

You may not have money for the curriculum you want. Homeschooling isn’t necessarily an inexpensive endeavor. In fact, some curriculums can be quite expensive. It is possible, however, to find free homeschool resources or you can purchase a used curriculum from other homeschoolers.

You may experience times of self-doubt, no matter how long you homeschool. It happens to some people who have homeschooled for years as well as to those new to homeschooling. If this is a problem, talk to other homeschool parents to get encouragement.

You may be concerned about your children not being around others. Socialization is one topic brought up when people say they’re considering homeschooling. While your children may be limited on a daily basis in who they interact with, many homeschooling families are involved in plenty of outside of the home activities such as scouting, religious, or community so their children can interact with others.

There are many pros and cons of home education. You can read through the above or talk with a homeschooling family to learn more about it. If you’re considering homeschooling, remember there are pros and cons to everything; you simply make the best decision you can based on the information you have.
